Mr Hamza Farrukh is currently Vice President, Macro Rates Sales at Goldman Sachs and is the founder of a multi-award-winning non-profit organisation, Bondh-e-Shams – The Solar Water Project. For the project, which began in his village in Chakwal while he was studying at the University of Oxford, he developed a water filtration and extraction system entirely reliant on solar power. The system can last for 25 years and can serve up to 5000 people each day. Almost 84% of Pakistan’s population does not have access to clean drinking water and Mr Farrukh is on a mission to provide a cost-effective, sustainable, and long-term solution by providing clean water to rural Pakistanis. He was featured in Forbes ‘30 under 30’ in 2018 for his outstanding achievements with Bond-e-Shams and awarded the Point of Light award by the Queen of England in 2020. His recent efforts for flood relief in Pakistan have been commendable, where he has provided approximately 50 ‘Solar Water Boxes’ a month to flood-affected areas of Sindh, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. The box is a long-term solution because once the floods recede, the same boxes can be moved to permanent water sources in the vicinity. The water is double-filtered, clean drinking water, which helps control water-borne diseases while preventing dehydration. Mr Farrukh’s aim is “to help diminish the global water crisis by 2050”.
